The proposed interrelationships between dietary fiber and certain diseases continue to enkindle debate and spark scientific research (Trowell and Burkitt, 1981). Among the fiber—disease connections, diabetes probably is more strongly related to the intake of dietary fiber than any other disease from epidemiological and experimental standpoints. The concept that a generous intake of dietary fiber may protect humans from diabetes has emerged over the last two decades from clinical, experimental, and epidemiological observations (Trowell, 1975). More recently the link between fiber and diabetes has been strengthened by well-documented studies (Jenkins et al ., 1976; Kiehm et al ., (1976) demonstrating that fiber intake has therapeutic benefits for diabetic patients. I will try to cite all of the full-length reports on the effects of dietary fiber on glucose metabolism of diabetic patients.
