The reaction between the furandione (I) and the semicarbazones (II) and (IV) or the thioureas/ureas (VII) proceeds via a common 6-carboxy-1H-pyrimidin-2-one intermediate, which spontaneously eliminates a molecule of water and of carbon dioxide to yield the title compounds (III), (V) or (VIII), respectively.
