Most Recent Developments in UV Curable Soft Touch Coatings

As much as aesthetic, the feel plays a decisive role in "buy or don't buy" decisions for consumer goods. Soft touch coatings are used extensively in computers, portable electronics, furniture, appliances, cosmetic packaging and last but not least cars interior. Because of the inherent benefits of UV cure technology - the possibility to coat virtually any substrates, the increased line speed, just﹊n‐time benefits and immediate "pack and ship" capabilities – there has been a lot of efforts to develop UV Curable Soft Touch Coatings. But despite the high versatility of the UV cure technology and the large number of building blocks available, it remains very challenging to formulate a UV curable soft touch coatings fulfilling all the stringent demands placed by the end-users. In addition to aesthetic and haptic initial and aged criteria, soft touch coatings have to be abrasion resistant, and exhibit outstanding resistance to moisture, yellowing and chemicals. An arrays of experiments were performed to determine the optimum composition for a UV-curable urethane oligomer for soft touch coatings. Among the parameters evaluated were the segment length, glass transition temperature, hydrophilic/lipophilic character, and acrylic functionality. The products were formulated with selected acrylic diluents and cross linkers to further optimize the balance of properties of the coatings.
