New Ultrasonic Equipment For Diagnostic Screening Of Paranasal Sinuses - An Experimental Study
摘要:
Simplified ultrasonic equipment for diagnostic screening of the paranasal sinuses using three different display units - oscilloscope (OSC), light emitting diodes (LED), and gas discharge (GD) displays - has been tested and compared in model experiments as well as on autopsy specimens. The different display units showed the same capacity in separating air from fluid contents. A statistically significant difference was found in the minimum amount of saline solution which could be detected in human sinuses with the OSC-display (mean 1.6 ml) compared with the GD-display (mean 2.1 ml) and with the LED-display (mean 3.1 ml). Artificial mucosal swelling 3 HI was detected with the OSC-display, while mucosal swelling < 8 mm was not detected with the other display units. Artificial cysts were detected and separated from saline solution with the OSC-display in model as well as in human experiments, which was not possible with the use of the other display units. The study indicates that the OSC-display unit may be the most valuable display technique for both scientific purposes and in clinical practice in separating different pathological conditions. The other simplified and less complicated display units (LED and GD) seem, however, to be useful for routine screening purposes.
