An acetylfucoidan having a molecular ratio of L-fucose : D-xylose : D-glucuronic acid : acetic acid : sulfuric acid of (3.0 to 5.0) : (0.03 to 0.3) : (0.5 to 1.5) : (0.1 to 1.5) : (0.5 to 1.5) is prepared from algae or spores of Cladosiphon okamuranus by using a mixer (a homogenizer), an acid (sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, or oxalic acid), barium chloride (or barium acetate), filtration thorugh diatomaceous earth, a continuous centrifugal separator, an electrodialyzer, an ultrafilter, a spray dryer, a freeze dryer and the like. <IMAGE>
