The transition-metal catalyzed decomposition of α-diazo carbonyl compounds (I), (IV) and (VI) (0.01 M solutions) leads to the formation of oxonium ylides of type (II), undergoing (2,3)-sigmatropic rearrangement to give the 3-furanones (III), (V) and (VII).
