Hand-washing patterns in medical intensive-care units.
摘要:
The risk of acquiring organisms, transmitting them to others, or causing a nosocomial infection may vary with the susceptibility of the patient and the type of patient contact. However, because patients in intensive-care units are highly susceptible to nosocomial infections, it has been suggested that personnel working with these patients should wash their hands more frquently. Compliance with these recommendations has not been evaluated. Therefore, the authors determined the frequency of hand washing in two medical intensive-care units, using a method that would not bias the results. It was found that, on the average, hospital personnel washed their hands after contact with patients less than half the time. Physicians were among the worst offenders.
