The resonant interaction of disturbances at laminar-turbulent transition in a boundary layer

The present investigation is concerned with an experimental study of the subharmonic excitation process in a laminar boundary layer at transition, taking into account an initiation by an initially two-dimensional Tollmien-Schlichting wave. An explanation is obtained for the excitation of low-frequency fluctuations with frequencies incommensurable with a fundamental wave frequency. Resonance excitation of subharmonics from natural disturbance is discussed, giving attention to the choice of a measurement regime, the analysis of oscillation oscilloscope traces, the existence of synchronism, amplitude and phase profiles, growth curves for disturbance amplitudes, and the evolution of fluctuation spectra. The resonant amplification of a controlled subharmonic priming oscillation is also considered.
