As water offers several advantages over organic solvents,reactions in aqueous media have received a great deal of attention in recent years.However,the asymmetric aldol reaction in water has proved very difficult to achieve.While proline has been reported to catalyze aldol reactions efficiently in polar solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF),and while a small amount of water is beneficial in some proline-mediated aldol reactions,only low enantioselectivities have been obtained in water even in the presence of a surfactant.
