Acid-Catalyzed Production of 5Hydroxymethyl Furfural from d Fructose in Subcritical Water

A batch-type sub-critical water system was used for performing decomposition reaction of fructose to 5-hydroxymethy furfural over a temperature range of 473~593 K. The catalytic effect of various organic and inorganic acids with pH values ranging from 1.5 to 5 and other pertaining parameters was evaluated. It was found that not only pH, but also nature of acid catalysts had great influence on decomposition of the reaction. Phosphoric acid at pH 2 was found to give good balance between activity, yield and by-product amounts; in lower pH rehydration and in higher pH polymerization reactions occurred. The decomposition reactions of other mono and disaccharides were also investigated; the best yield (65%) of 5-hydroxymethy furfural from fructose feedstock was achieved with phosphoric acid (pH 2) as catalyst at 513 K for 120sec residence time.
