1351902 Seaming UNION CARBIDE CORP 12 May 1972 [13 May 1971] 22304/72 Heading B5K [Also in Division F2] In a process for producing single ply tubing, a plurality of continuous strips 11, 13 are advanced over guiding means 15 and brought into adjacent relationship at a forming means 17 where they are arcuately shaped to form a tube 21 with overlapping edges which are then bonded. As shown in Fig. 3, the tube may be formed from two strips 11, 13 but in another arrangement three strips are used, not necessarily of equal widths (Figs. 5, 7, 9 not shown). The strips may be of equal or unequal width and may be of different colours, strength properties and light transmitting properties. The strips may be of fibrous reinforcing material such as paper and the tube formed therefrom is passed through a viscose bath and then through a regenerating bath to form a fibrous reinforced cellulosic tubing. As shown in Fig. 8 the overlapping strip edges may be seamed by applying a strip of viscose to the edges of the strips through a nozzle 43 having a slot 45. The edge of the adjacent strip is held away during this application by a guide plate (47) (Fig. 9, not shown) and the edges are subsequently pressed together as the tube advances between a raised portion 49 of a mandrel 19 and the annular forming collar 17. The strips may be of other materials, in particular plastics such as polyvinylacetate, PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinylidene chloride and copolymers thereof and the seam bonding may be effected by heat sealing or with a thermoplastic or thermosetting adhesive. Other materials include hemp fibres bonded with regenerated cellulose, Yoshino or rice paper, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, acrylonitrile, rayon, cotton, cheese cloth, muslin, organdie, marquisette, and voile.
